Learn / Genre strategy

Picking a genre that sells.

Most self-published authors don't get to pick their genre โ€” they wrote the book they wanted to write, and the genre is whatever it is. This article is about positioning that genre well, not about changing what you've written.

The categories doing well right now

Romance and romantasy remain the highest-grossing self-published categories globally โ€” and the same is true on Amazon India in English-language fiction.

Mystery, thriller and suspense are next, with cozy mystery and domestic thriller doing disproportionately well for self-published authors.

Self-help, business and personal-finance non-fiction are growing fast in India, particularly Hindi-language editions of bestselling English titles.

Memoir and biography โ€” particularly entrepreneur memoirs and spiritual memoirs โ€” find strong audiences on LinkedIn and Audible.

Categories that are hard to break into

Literary fiction is the toughest self-publishing category โ€” it's where traditional publishing still has the strongest hold and where prizes and critical reception matter most.

Children's picture books are hard because they require colour interiors, expensive printing, and an audience (parents) that's harder to reach with digital marketing.

Poetry collections sell on social, not search โ€” they need an author with an existing platform on Instagram or YouTube to do well.

Picking your two Amazon categories

Amazon lets you list your book in two primary categories. The instinct is to pick the broadest categories possible, but the opposite usually wins โ€” narrower categories are easier to rank in.

Aim for #1 in a narrow category rather than #500 in a broad one. The #1 badge in a category is worth more than position 500 in a more popular one โ€” it drives the Amazon algorithm to recommend your book to more readers.

The seven keyword slots

Amazon gives you seven keyword slots when you list your book. These are the search phrases your book will surface for.

Use them on phrases real readers type into Amazon search โ€” not single words. 'Slow-burn enemies to lovers romance' beats 'romance'.

We do this research as part of every Professional and Launchpad package โ€” it's one of the highest-impact things you can get right at launch.
